| Today, 4.5 million
people in the United States are diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease, which excludes
those in the very early stages of the disease, undiagnosed, those who will develop
the disease, and the other three forms of dementia. In 5 years, an
estimated 15 million people will be diagnosed with Alzheimer's. That's half of
today's 65 year old and older population. For support, answers, help
and more information about this cruel disease, please refer to www.alz.org for
the national chapter, or www.alzgmc.org for the Michigan chapter. In
2001, 2.2% of all deaths in the United States were caused by Alzheimer's; 29%
of all deaths were caused by heart disease. Death certificates often denote 'Conjunctive
Heart Failure' or 'Congestive Heart Failure', both heart disease related catalysts,
as the cause of death for those who were also victims of Alzheimer's. 22.9% of
all deaths in 2001 were caused by cancer. Alzheimer's is a complicated disease,
which means that it renders the body unable to fight other diseases and ailments.
When the body is rendered helpless, complications such as heart failure, respiratory
failure, and other major organ failures take life. Today, Alzheimer's
cannot be stopped; it cannot be prevented. But we are close. Researchers have
identified the very cells that cause the tangling of the brain. As you read this,
researchers are conducting tests to break up the tangles, to destroy the protein
build ups on the brain, and each new test brings us one step closer to overcoming,
to winning the battle. While Alzheimer's research has become quite
controversial because of stem cell research projects, two very critical facts
tend not to make their way to the headlines: stem cell research is only one small
part of the vast research being done for prevention and cure; the majority of
stem cell research is performed on adults. Successes have been achieved and a
lot though
small victories, they put us one step closer.
Alzheimer's Association offers many ways
a person may help those affected by Alzheimer's
cruel hand. Whether you wish to help researchers
or help a local city's chapter, help is needed.
We invite you to consider contributing.
